This afternoon portions of the lower three rings of the ramp exiting the parking garage at South Avenue and Broad Street in Rochester collapsed. The following six images (taken by me) document the scene about three hours after the event, between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m. Friday night.

I was driving down Clinton today and trying to get a visual of how high the storm surge (from Katrina) would be in Rochester. Here's a try (thanks to the Mt. Morris dam (and our longitude) I don't need to worry too much.

Pat Mitchell, the president of the Public Broadcasting System, was in Rochester on June 8, 2005. While driving in downtown I noticed long lines of people along both sides of Monroe Avenue. They are Democracy Now! supporters, out to let Norm Silverstein and Pat Mitchell know how much they like the program and that they would like it even better on the local NPR or PBS station.

The discussion was informative and moved along. Pat Mitchell's remarks were very similar to those she gave at the National Press Club on May 24, something like her stump speech on issues for PBS as they move forward.

While cruising at FL370 on a Wednesday flight from Atlanta to Rochester I decided to get a photo of the cloud cover below and blue above, with the nicely backlit sun. As I was composing the shot I noticed something in the frame and thought 'what luck' and started zooming. In this first shot the twin engine is 9 o'clock to me, on a heading of 030 to our 360, and we are overtaking him quickly. I'd guess no more than ten seconds elapsed from this one to the last.

Is it too good to last? -- I knew there was a reason I've been saving off those classic FPUS3's from McLaughlin in Buffalo.

The thing is Accuweather, Wx Channel are in it to make money, not to serve people who really enjoy reading the AFDs, climo summaries, and the latest meso scale discussions from the SPC.

'Going dark' is a good phrase to use -- shutting this off will just shut off another avenue for people to enjoy our resources and general research, and all the long term benefits that accrue from those pursuits.

It is a cool, rainy spring evening ( 003 OVC 3/4 R-F 42/42/33007/994) with John Coltrane's 'I Want to Talk About You' on the box - as good a time for a blog to be born as any.
